Devil's Song 03:49
The Devil walks the town at noon looking for a lonesome tune. Reach out and grab you up, the Devil reach out and grab you up. Don't you sing a lonesome tune at the hour of noon. The Devil's horse is at the hitching post. Gather your children he's coming close. Crying time is everywhere. The Devil smiles, he just don't care. Gather your children close he's at the hitching post. The Devil's feet are on the ground like the hammer and nail in the coffin sound. He's stepping to a funeral dirge. The Devil steps to a funeral dirge. Don't you go out; don't you walk to town the Devil's feet are on the ground. Oh lord I'm on my knees. Oh lord won't you help me please. The rain fell down with knives tonight. My lord looks down on me with spite. The Devil took my own true love. While I did tarry, he took my own true love. Tomorrow by the willow tree the Devils coming for me.

Haunted woman of the twilight hours how swift eternity can be devoured from the belly of death, up you climbed As I passed going down toward mine. What foolish game did I think to play? Your spirit's free or so they say. Yet slim hours held us close As the summer holds the rose. and I woke up lonely. We kissed the kiss of perfect love and in autumn danced with the moon above but soon the winter blew cold winds and more and shadows gathered up against my door. Until I shivered on a forgotten trail a lonesome ship on water without sail the reason for parting, I don't understand any but that I dreamt one dream while you dreamt many. and you woke up lonely. So now we sing the songs that are the same where dread arrows pierce our heart and brain. Oh Haunted woman of the twilight hour how swift eternity can be devoured. and we wake up lonely.

Rollin' 04:32
Feeling good I gotta roll. I gotta rove on mamma, rove on, yeah I'm rollin. Don't worry, I'll be find when I motar on. If you're in love with another man why don't you take your chances. Baby, take your chances. I'll just keep on going. I keep on going cuase I'm rollin. I'm rollin' oh yeah, oh yeah. Come on girl I got all you need. I got loving, loving; I got money honey. I don't know where tomorrow brings me, but I'm rollin. Yeah I'm rollin. Life it's good when you feel it. When the fires are burning, when the fires are burning. So when you go, when you go I'll be holey rollin. I'll be walking on.

By William Blake: O Rose thou art sick. The invisible worm, That flies in the night In the howling storm: Has found out thy bed Of crimson joy: And his dark secret love Does thy life destroy.

Stranger 02:58
Hey little stranger what's happening to you? I think you're in danger, and I'm in it too. Folks caught us talking, behind the saloon, drawing up pictures and plots far too soon. Run girl before it's too late for your heart. Run girl before the world rips it apart. Meet in the graveyard on old Johnson's Hill. The blue moon in darkness we're gonna have one more thrill. My pockets are broken. My heads full of pills. The rough world's choking and giving me chills. Run girl before it's too late for your heart. Run girl before the world rips it apart. Life it's a liar to the crippled and caged. We all die by fire burning into old age. Close your eyes stranger and breath the cold night. Roll over baby, I'll turn out the light. I will get up and turn out the light.

Wire 03:21
Across the maze of black cords old songs warm glass wires. A bird with talons sharp and soft lips cooing down my ear. Saying "stay, come get me Stay, come get me." But she means live, live here in the poetry of sound passed like the packets of a dream of skin of fantasy. Saying "stay, come get me Stay, come get me." Now you are a lion in my mind prowling through the power stations pushing images up into me till all that comes is poetry. Saying "stay, come get me Stay, come get me."

Lake of Fire 04:00
When you gonna open up the gate let it flow the love and hate? When you gonna unlock the door let it poor and poor and poor? Open the lake of water over the lake of fire. When you gonna push back from the bar put your last tip in the jar? When you gonna realize you move from lies to lies to lies? Open the lake of water over the lake of fire. You think you're walking but your not. You think your giving all you got. But still presence crumbles up. You collapse and you give up. Let it steam and let it out. Don't be afraid just to doubt. Why be cruel with all you do when it is only killing you? Open the lake of water over the lake of fire.

Spin Cycle 03:36
For a minute I thought it was God at the door. It was just some guy with a vacuum cleaner says he wants to put some dust on my floor. "Go away," I say "I got enough dust of my own." It's like a death pall covering all the relics in my old home. He just smiles and winks and says, "I'll come back later." I go in my house and clean up all the shit behind my refrigerator. It's funny all the stuff back there, long lost covered in fur. Wires click, deep brown stick and the engine starts to purr. So I go to the grocery store. I put it in my kitchen sink. When I'm out of my head I think. "What's it all for?" There's a man on my street who only cares about his lawn. But his kids and the neighbors kids and the dog, they know what a yards for. They play hard till the grass is gone. He comes home he sets up wires and poles and strings. He throws down more seed and some screens baring everything. His wife she's alright she stationwagons the kids to the football game. At night she's dressed in white, no Madonna - works for a dentist - her old man says "she's a good dame." When she comes home you know she's careful to walk in the sidewalk squares. She thinks everybody's watching but no one really cares. And she goes to the grocery store. She puts it in her kitchen sink. When she's out of her head she think, "What's it all for?" Well you can call me a heathen cause I'm frustrated by religian. But on Sunday you go to church and on Monday you vacuum up the clouds of deliberation. Didn't he say I'm a salesman, take my dust I'll clean it later. But how should I know God with all that shit behind my refrigerator? I've got volumes of philosophy but I don't lift the page. Is Jesus in Johannesburg, is Buddha in Beijing, are we growing together or just growing in age? So the cloths spin round in the foam and fluff and the suds, and no matter what brand we use to get it all clean it's not enough. So we go to the grocery store. And we put it in our kitchen sinks. When we're out of our heads we think, "What's it all for?"

The summer is warm, but you like it cold. I've been here so long, and it's getting old. All your powers and potions, your pagan notions; your chains and leather; your pills and feathers; your strange postilions; your mad fruition; your Celtic goddess; your magic lockettes I'm tired of tying up, tying up, tying up I'm tired of tying up you. I'm brown with the sun, but you're white like a goat. I'm screaming "we're done" but I'm caught in your moat. You say, "hit me, bite me; squeeze me tightly; be my daddy; make me happy; touch my body; burn my body; you've been naughty I've got to treat you haughtily." I'm tired of tying up, tying up, tying up I'm tired of tying up you. I'm gonna go searching, while you sit there learching I'm gonna find someone new. So don't try to find me, cause spirits they guide me knowing I need someone new. My sister's babies they just disgust you. You think that it's crazy, what women must go through. But you're a selfish princess, I do your dishes You call me lover, but it's under the cover You won't meet my family, you won't eat my candy. I buy you flowers and you bitch for hours. So, I'm tired of tying up, tying up, tying up I'm tired of tying up you.

Clover 03:05
Where do you go when it's all over when they lay you down in a bed of clover? When your day is done. When your life is all over. When the sweet angel of mercy isn't hanging over your shoulder. Some say you'll be burning. Some say it's freezing Some say there's nothing, but if there's nothing then there's no reason. Now I'm alone and the night is growing colder the fire is dyeing and my thoughts they're frozen. But it's alright Ma and it's alright Papa. Your baby boy he's got a way to make it.

about

Recorded July, 2018 at Jean-Claude and Odette's chateau in Butot-Vénesville, Normandy. I played as many originals as I could remember on one of Ara's lovely Godin acoustic guitars. Ara did an amazing job with the recording and mix down using just a room mic and a sound hole pickup on the guitar. My playing and singing aren't perfect, but the recording was so nicely done I thought it should go up here. Many thanks to Ara for recording and to Melodie for providing the space!
